Spot-On: Not So Fast

Back in the early ’60s the burgers sold for 12 cents apiece; my mother could feed herself and three kids for about $3.00 and during the summer she did so once every week or so. The four of us sat in an un-air-conditioned Rambler station wagon, sweating like the cups of coke we washed the burgers down with. So, even though “they’re nasty little burgers,” I have a soft spot in my heart and taste buds for that childhood treat.

I have fond memories of our Rambler station wagons. The McDonald’s that opened on Western Avenue was one of the originals. Burgers were 15 cents.

I have to swing by Krystal’s everytime I’m in Knoxville. How cool is it that they have free wi-fi?Fixing your potatoes parmigiano as type. Excuse me while I go sneak some of my neighbor’s chives.

  • Kevin:

Christy,I did know Krystal had Wi-Fi. Cool!I think the potatoes are extraordinarily good for something so simple. Let me know how it turns out.

  • Kevin:

Ed,Missed your comment, I learned to drive a car with that Rambler. It was a stick shift (weren’t they all back then) and the clutch engaged in 1/2″ of the complete 6″ of pedal travel. Talk about jack rabbit starts…

  • Christy:

The potatoes parmigiano were delish, thanks for posting the recipe. Do you mind my asking, what exactly is fruity olive oil?

  • Kevin:

Christy,I define “fruity” as meaning you can taste the olive. Sometimes this means a distinct olive flavor (which I love), but in other cases it simply means it tastes like something that grew in the ground.

  • Sonia:

Kevin, I well remember the Krystal burgers. When I came to school in the states, we would stop at the local one on our way after school for what was then a treat! Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

  • Ariansmith:

I grew up in Denver Colorado, so there wasnt much in the way of memorable fast food, just McDs, BK and Jack in the Box. But when I moved to San Diego at age 14 boy was I surprised! The venerable taco shop became, and still is, my favorite fast food joint. Cheap, fast tasty salty and yes greasy as can be. Yum!

  • Kevin:

Tuuktalus,Yeah, you understand that childhood taste, and perhaps in San Diego your remembered taco shops even served the Mexican equivalent of a Litton’s burger.
