Mac-n-Cheese-Off

Mac-n-Cheese-Off

ingredients

After the over-the-top holiday eating I like something something basic and homey. When CookieCrumb (CC) at I’m Mad and I Eat mentioned she was making mac-n-cheese, I thought it would be perfect meal for the first week of the New Year.

So on Friday, January 5th, CC and I are having a mac-n-cheese-off. It’s not a contest, nor even an “event” as such. We’re just both going to post our recipes for macaroni and cheese that day. If you’d like to play, you’re welcome to, just post your recipe on the 5th and if you want a technorati tag, I’ll be using mac-n-cheese-off. And cheesy photographs are encouraged.

Next post.

Are you talkin’ to me?You talkin’ to me?I don’t see anybody else here, so you must be talkin’ to me.OK, then, Jan. 5 it is, Mac.I hope a bunch of bloggers will join in the fun. It will be cheesy!

Your cheesy photograph mention reminded me of what has to be the worst recipe I ever remember seeing. It came from an ancient recipe leaflet that belongs to my 90-year-old aunt and is called “Ring Around the Tuna.” Picture this: A ring-shaped Lime Jello-O mold studded with pimento-stuffed green olives and assorted shredded vegetables, into the middle of which is dumped several cans of tuna. A cheesy visual delight!

  • Erin S.:

sweet! I have a fav recipe I haven’t made in ages….it is the absolute best. See you on the 5th!

  • Kevin:

CC,With you involved, it can only be cheesy. Hey, I hope your Christmas is exactly what you deserve.{cheesy smile}Alamobecky,That’s definitely cheesy.Erin,On the 5th!

  • Lannae:

Ah, Mac and Cheese, one of my favorite foods! I may try to participate. I will be using my blue and white lion shaped pasta for PennState Univ! Go Nittany Lions!

  • Kevin:

Lannae,I’ve used my Emile Henry casserole dish the last couple of times I made mac-n-cheese. It has the advantage of offering lots of surface arrea for browning the cheese, but it also anables more evaporation resulting in a drier dish. I think the solution is to stick with that casserole (it’s royal blue is gorgeous against the yellow cheese and you can’t have too much crust) but make a thinner bechamel to allow for evaporation.

Well darn. I just did a story tonight on baked ziti for the paper, but it won’t come out for a couple of weeks. I don’t know that I’ll have the calorie reserves to suss out my legendary Martha mac’n'cheese. Probably for the best.Happy holidays and such.

  • Jocelyn:McAuliflower:

    But i want M&C now!

  • Kevin:

S’kat,Wimp. And happy holidays to you.Mac,You can make it now, we’re just not having the cheese-off until the 5th.

  • Kate:

I am all for participating in a Mac-n-Cheese Off…..just the title makes me want to roll off my chair in a fit of laughter. I will come in with my pans blazin’!

  • Sister K:

Just stumbled upon your blog. I love this idea! Mac-n-Cheese on 1/5/07 it is! I like the ring of “Cheese Off” but really, it feels more like a “Cheese In” to me, what with all the comfy nesting and recipe-sharing without competition and such.

  • Kevin:

Sistr K,Thanks for stopping by, and please join us in the cheese off.

ok, the new blogger hates me… I am the last comment person, only this time, not anonymous! Cheese!

  • Kevin:

Stacie,Sometimes the new blogger acts a bit cheesy.

  • Bezzie:

Mac n’cheese is a religious meal at our house reserved for Sundays only ;-) I will have to partake in the cheesey goodness on Sunday 1/7 instead.

  • Kevin:

Bezzie,Sunday 12/31 is also an option, but it’s your call — so long as whatever you do is cheesy.

  • Wendy:

We’d be happy to join the “Cheese-Off” from here in Maine with one caveat – not macaroni, but certainly pasta, and a nice alfredo with local cheese and cream. Looking forward to “playing.” See you January 5.

  • Kevin:

Wendy,Thanks for dropping by — and I’ll “see” you on the 5th.

  • Alanna Kellogg:

How wicked an idea is THIS, straight-away from Christmas? I just removed the last of the Christmas cookies last night, for goodness sake. But hmm. There is all that leftover cheese …

  • Kevin:

Chat,I’ll check it out.Alanna,It was Cookiecrumb, who started it! I’m just an unindicted coconspirator.

  • Columbus Foodie:

Great idea for an event – count me in! http://www.columbusfoodie.com/2007/01/05/mac-n-cheese-off/

Hi – what a great idea! I love mac-n-cheese and put up my post. Excuse my lack of recipe – I was winging it since the lack of cheddar means I don’t make it that often and wasn’t using a “tried-and-true” recipe! I’ll check out the other posts for one. ;) I had fun anyway!

  • Kevin:

Ms.Thanks for joining in, and I love your blog name.
